Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award 2008

Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award

The Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award is a national bi-annual award and exhibition that recognises young and emerging visual artists.

The award offers an acquisitive first prize of $5000, a highly commended prize of $3000 and a commended prize of $800. Established in 1981 and awarded biennially, it is one of a limited number of opportunities for young talent, aged between 18 and 28 years, to be profiled and recognised by both arts industry peers and the broader community.

The award was set up during the lifetime of renowned artist Lloyd Rees and his work continues to be recognised, respected and associated with excellence in the visual arts. Therefore the award attracts a high calibre of entrants who work in painting, drawing and printmaking. A rotating panel of visual arts experts judges the award. The panel has been led by Guy Warren, an Archibald-winning artist and close friend of Lloyd Rees, since its establishment. The Rees family continues to support and be closely associated with the award.

In 2007, Allens Arthur Robinson was proud to sponsor the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award. The judges for the 2007 award included Mr Warren, Euan Macleod and Mirabel Fitzgerald. Mr Macleod was the winner of the prestigious Archibald Prize for portraiture in 1999. His paintings and drawings feature in prominent public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Chartwell Collection, New Zealand.

Mirabel Fitzgerald is a Honorary Associate Professor and former Head of Department, Print Media Studio, at the Sydney College of the Arts and is an accomplished exhibiting artist and print maker.

The 2007 award night was held at the Lane Cove Civic Centre on Friday, 12 October and hosted by Lane Cove Mayor Ian Longbottom. Mathew Bromhead won the award for his artwork Thirty Degrees East. Dean Brown won the highly commended prize and Tamara Mendels won the commended prize.

Rugby World Cup 2003

Allens Arthur Robinson was proud to support Rugby World Cup 2003 as the Official Law Firm. Around two million Australians attended matches, with millions more watching around the world.

As an Asia Pacific firm, Allens provided the full range of legal services, but the emphasis was upon protection of trade marks and other intellectual property rights and litigation, sports law issues and broadcasting and commercial issues. The Allens team was led by two senior partners, Richard Alcock and Jim Dwyer.

'Having been involved in other high-profile international sporting events, our firm was delighted to be involved with Rugby World Cup,' said Mr Alcock.

We received fantastic feedback on our Rugby Shootout game and 131,158 players had a go during the competition period (note: this is not an official game of Rugby World Cup 2003). You can still play the Rugby Shootout game though winning entries can no longer be submitted.

We look forward to the next Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in 2011.
