Publication: Paper: Resources and Environmental Tax Changes

There has been a great deal of focus over the last 12 months on the taxation of resource projects. While the Henry Review made some limited recommendations in relation to environmental tax changes, nothing has yet happened to them and we will no doubt need to wait for the tax summit in the middle of the year to see if they develop further. More recently, the Government has started to canvass the possibility of a carbon tax, as a means of accommodating a delayed permit based carbon regime. Given the emphasis over the last 12 months on changes to resource taxation and in particular the announced minerals resource rent tax and extended petroleum resource rent tax, this paper will focus predominately on those issues.
