FDA bans Bayer poultry antibiotic
July 28 – The US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of Baytril, Bayer's poultry antibiotic, citing the product interferes with the diagnosis of food poisoning in human patients. Baytril, a fluoroquinilone based drug, is used to prevent the growth of drug-resistant germs within poultry that infect people. The ban is the first time the FDA has withdrawn an antibiotic drug for animals based on its impacts on humans.

Top generics push branded drug patents
August 2 – A study by Kline and Company has suggested that large generic companies are actively contesting brand-name patents in order to bring the generic versions to market sooner. Generic products are usually marketed upon patent expiry of the brand-name product, however recent acquisitions have greatly expanded the generic markets and provided sufficient resources to contest brand-name patents.
