Australian researchers work on first biological test for schizophrenia

August 1 – Researchers at the University of New South Wales are developing the first biological test to diagnose schizophrenia. Current methods rely on psychiatric evaluation of a patient for diagnosis. The test involves the use of electroencephalograph brain scans that may indicate differences in the way people process sounds while performing visual tasks. Although promising, the developmental test is in its infancy, with researchers predicting it will be a number of years before an established test is widely available.
