CSIRO partners with Neurosciences Australia
August 4 CSIRO's Preventative Health National Research Flagship is commencing research to tackle the structural biology and modelling of proteins involved in Alzheimer's dementia, with a view to identifying new preventative approaches. The research will be conducted in partnership with Neurosciences Australia and the National Ageing Research Institute. The group will also examine methods to prevent or delay cognitive decline in population groups with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. With the disease affecting over one per cent of the Australian population at a cost of AU$6.6 billion this year, the research estimates that by delaying the onset of dementia by five month would result in a AU$1.3 billion saving by 2020.
