Chiron submits preliminary dossier for potential pandemic flu vaccine to European Medicines Agency

24 February – Chiron Corporation has submitted a preliminary dossier to the European Medicines Agency for a potential human pandemic bird flu vaccine. Chiron is the second company (following GlaxoSmithKline) to use the 'core dossier' approach which allows the evaluation and approval of an application based on a 'mock-up vaccine' before the outbreak of a pandemic. Once the actual virus strain has been identified at the time of the outbreak of the influenza pandemic, a variation to the core dossier is submitted to incorporate that strain. Chiron announced that it has entered into a supply contract with the UK government for pre-pandemic influenza vaccine for a stockpile based on the H5N1 avian influenza virus strain.
