Allens Arthur Robinson boosts Shanghai team

28 November 2005

Allens Arthur Robinson (AAR) has announced that two partners will be relocating to its Shanghai office, replacing departing partner Michael Cripps. Leveraging off the recent growth in the Chinese legal market, AAR has also announced that five more lawyers will also be joining the Shanghai office.

Niranjan Arasaratnam, a partner in the Hong Kong office specialising in communications, media and technology, has already relocated to the Shanghai office. Campbell Davidson, currently a partner in the Corporate & Commercial department in Sydney, will be starting shortly.

Michael is returning to Australia to take up the role of Group General Counsel at Insurance Australia Group (IAG).

Jim Dunstan, AAR's executive partner, Asia-Pacific, said: 'We see the Asia-Pacific, particularly China, as a significant growth area for AAR over the next few years. It's an exciting time for us.

'The increase in size in our Shanghai office reflects the broadening of our practice and the growth of our international client base.

'We wish Michael all the best in his new position with IAG, as IAG further expands in the Asia-Pacific region.'

Incoming Shanghai partner Campbell Davidson said: 'The legal market in China is maturing at a significant rate. I'm looking forward to using my experience gained in the UK, Asia and Australia to assist clients in growing and developing their businesses in what is one of the most dynamic parts of the global economy.'

Incoming Shanghai partner Niranjan Arasaratnam said: 'Most of my work already has a China connection, so it's a very logical next step. Demand for legal services in the Greater China region continues to rise.'

Mr Dunstan said AAR is targeting steady growth in the Greater China region, following the doubling of its presence in both Hong Kong and mainland China during the past 18 months to meet increased client demand.

Currently, AAR has a total of 8 partners and 28 lawyers based in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.
