It's not just the English who drop-kick their way into the Rugby World Cup 2003 final
21 November 2003
A Melbourne physiotherapist will go from working on local rugby players to watching 30 of the world's best at the Rugby World Cup 2003 final after winning the second round of Allens Arthur Robinson's (AAR) online drop-kicking competition.
Tim McCurdy beat thousands of other entrants for the two finals tickets to the year's biggest sporting event, courtesy of the Official Law Firm for Rugby World Cup 2003.
He'll take time out from his successful physio practice, where he helps the occasional rugby player get back out on the field, to take in the atmosphere and drama of the 22 November final.
'This will be by far the biggest sporting event I've ever attended,'" said Mr McCurdy. 'It's going to be very exciting.'
More than 131,000 people played the online game, in which they were pitted against one of the 20 nations involved in RWC 2003 to win tickets to the opening game and final.
'We've been continually surprised by the game's popularity,' said AAR Director - Marketing & Client Services, Mr David McClune. 'Our website featured a link to the game and we found that our clients and visitors to the site were passing it on to friends and colleagues around Australia and internationally.'
The link to the game was sent to Mr McCurdy by a friend working for a banking client of AAR.
'The game was a fun way to highlight our involvement in RWC 2003. Behind the scenes, our lawyers have been working hard with organisers on everything from preventing ambush marketing through to helping with player disciplinary hearings,' said Mr McClune.
RWC 2003 was the first time an Official Law Firm was appointed by the International Rugby Board.
'Our involvement in the tournament has been extremely beneficial,' said Mr McClune. 'It's generated a lot of positive client feedback from around the Asia Pacific, reinforcing our reputation for having a world-class sports and intellectual property practice.
'We congratulate RWC 2003 organisers for the breadth of their vision and successful day-to-day management of what has been a hugely successful international sporting festival.'
