Allens appoints new Partner to Perth office

13 April 2010

High-profile Perth resources and native title practitioner Marshall McKenna has been appointed a partner at Allens Arthur Robinson (Allens) focusing on litigation and dispute resolution matters.

Mr McKenna joins Allens from boutique Perth firm Hunt & Humphry, where he has been a partner since 2000.

'Perth is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing legal markets in Australia,' said Perth Practice Leader Andrew Pascoe. 'But rather than rush into a series of appointments, we've been looking for particular people with specific expertise.

'Marshall's track-record and market reputation will complement our existing team of exceptional litigation lawyers led by Jenny Thornton and Kim Reid,' added Mr Pascoe.

Mr McKenna focuses on commercial litigation, mining litigation, native title litigation, land access agreements, negotiating compensation, heritage and intellectual property.

Mr McKenna has been involved in a number of high-profile cases, including acting as counsel for the pastoral interests in the Miriuwung Gajerrong native title claim (Ward v Western Australia), the first contested claim to be heard by the Federal Court, and in the Full Federal Court and the High Court appeals in that matter. More recently, he was counsel for the successful party in the landmark land access decision of the National Native Title Tribunal in the Holocene case. He also edits or contributes to leading native title and mining law publications and teaches mining law.

Perth Litigation Partner Jenny Thornton said Mr McKenna was joining a busy practice.

'There's been plenty of talk around the energy and resources law in the west, but the growing demands and complexity of resources agreements, along with often fierce competition for positioning around resource assets and infrastructure, has meant that we've seen a significant upsurge both in disputes and clients seeking advice on how to avoid them,' said Ms Thornton.

'Given Allens' reputation for excellence, the complexity of the work on offer and the firm's client base, I'm looking forward to joining the team in July,' said Mr McKenna.
