Allens wins United Nations award for sustainability

7 June 2010

International law firm Allens Arthur Robinson (Allens) won the WSP Lincolne Scott Sustainability Leadership Award at the United Nations Association of Australia's World Environment Day Awards, announced on Friday 4 June 2010.

According to the United Nations Association of Australia, Allens was recognised 'for its performance and approach to sustainability as well as its ability to influence both their suppliers and clients from an environmental, social and community perspective'.

Allens has been committed to sustainability and to supporting the environment for the past 10 years and the firm's commitment to being sustainable leaders is driven by the Allens Footprint Committees.

According to Partner and member of the Footprint Secretariat Jackie O'Brien: 'Sustainability is at the forefront of Allens' decision-making processes, planning and operations.

'A cross-section of people from across our offices make up our Footprint Committees, and they are the ones driving change and they are the ones continually suggesting what changes we can make that will reduce our organisation's environmental footprint.'

The Footprint Committees have achieved a lot over the past decade. From the significant changes to the ways the firm operates – like virtualising servers, reducing paper usage by 47 per cent, switching to GreenPower and becoming a Fairtrade workplace – to the novel – rolling out subsidised KeepCups, supplying public transport tickets instead of cab charges and removing globes from all fridges.

Allens was a finalist alongside the firm's long-time client the National Australia Bank, which received a special commendation, and supplier Corporate Express Australia.

'It is exciting to be recognised by this award, but it is equally pleasing to be nominated alongside such close organisations of the firm and to know that we have associations with these great businesses that also feel very passionate about sustainability and environmental issues,' added Ms O'Brien.
