Allens Arthur Robinson acts as legal adviser in Fresenius Kabi's acquisition of Cosco Pharm

04 April 2008

Leading international law firm Allens Arthur Robinson (Allens) has acted as the legal adviser for Fresenius Kabi (China) in the company's acquisition of 100 per cent of the equity in Cosco Pharm, the third-largest manufacturer of blood bags in China.

The Allens team, led by Partner Niranjan Arasaratnam and Senior Associates Frank Voon and Wayne Wang, played an important role in helping Fresenius Kabi, a subsidiary of German-listed company Fresenius SE, acquire Cosco Pharm from three companies: Cosco Guangzhou, Guanyuan Ocean Shipping Services and Nanfang Blood Centre.

Mr Arasaratnam said 'China's rapid economic development and expanding middle class has led to a demand for higher quality medical care. Fresenius is tapping into these opportunities in China, and elsewhere in Asia. This acquisition adds to Fresenius' growing Asian portfolio and is a positive step towards the further expansion of Fresenius Kabi's business with medical devices for blood collection and processing in the Asia Pacific.'

The deal was significant because it will enable Fresenius Kabi to rapidly expand its transfusion technology business in the Asia Pacific region. It was also subject to public bidding procedures for State-owned assets, and Ministry of Commerce and State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission approvals were required.

'Fresenius is an important client of ours and we were delighted to work with them on their latest investment in China,' Mr Arasaratnam said.
