Ian's in-depth understanding of his clients' businesses, his commerciality and flexibility, have resulted in a range of domestic and international banking institutions and major corporate borrowers repeatedly seeking his advice on all aspects of their corporate finance, asset finance, infrastructure finance, capital markets and derivatives transactions.

Structured finance transactions, including property finance and aircraft finance transactions, are a particular area of expertise.

Aviation matters in which Ian has advised include Japanese, US, German, Swedish and Australian leveraged leases, FSC financings and export credit supported financings. He has advised both lessors and lessees extensively in relation to both dry and wet operating leasing transactions in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

Recent assignments include advising financiers to Qantas in connection with the acquisition of 15 B737 800NG aircraft, advising Virgin Blue in connection with its purchase of up to 50 new B737 800NG aircraft, advising GE Commercial in connection with the lease financing of the provision by Hawker Pacific of seven new Navigational Trainer aircraft on a fully maintained basis to the RAAF, and advising Air New Zealand in connection with its purchase agreements with Boeing and Rolls Royce for B777 and B787 aircraft and associated engines.

He advises on a wide range of issues including all aspects of finance and operating leasing, single lender and syndicated loans, debt capital markets, securitisations interest rate and currency exchange contracts and related documentation.

He has also advised numerous participants in various mortgage and asset-backed securitisations, including Ford Credit Auto, RAMs, Interstar, Residential Mortgage Trust and Superannuation Members Home Loans.

Between 1997 and 2002, he advised Burns Philp & Co on its corporate restructuring, particularly the restructuring of its global debt obligations and associated equity raisings.

During 2002, he acted for ABN Amro in connection with the complex A$1.8 billion refinancing of the City Link Toll Road in Melbourne. He has recently acted for the financiers in a series of structured property finance transactions for the Record Realty Trust, for the financier to a student accommodation project at Swinburne University in Melbourne, the financier to the acquisition of the Sydney Opera House Car Park and for the project vehicle for a student accommodation project at the Australian National University in Canberra. From late 2004, he advised Henry Walker Eltin Group in relation to its restructuring and, subsequently, its administration.
