Our people want
to make a difference. Not only in law and business but in the wider community.
The things we do must be done well and have a real and lasting impact.
Our full community brochure is available as a self contained Flash file. This
will open in a new window.
We
recognise that we have broad responsibilities to our people, their families
and the communities in which we live.
Allens Chief Executive Partner Michael Rose outlines the firm's approach to community involvement.
Our success as a firm is built on the talent and enthusiasm of
our people and the values they bring with them from their homes and their
communities. We have gifted and motivated people who want to make a difference,
not only in the law and in business but also in the wider community.
For many
years now, we have drawn on the talent and experience of our people to support
community organisations, assist in the resolution of important legal and public
interest issues and to play a role in significant community issues such as
reconciliation and the protection of our environment.
This brochure provides an
overview of what we do in the community. We are proud of our community
activities and proud of our people who work with great passion, energy and
commitment for the benefit of the wider community.
We sponsored AIME National Hoodie Day on 21 July 2010. AIME
is the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience, which is an initiative that
partners university students in a one-on-one relationship with Indigenous high
school students. On Wednesday 21 July, AIME asked the Australian community
to don a red AIME hoodie and say to the next generation who are stepping up with
AIME - 'We will walk with you'. There were 100 people across our firm wearing
a red hoodie on AIME National Hoodie Day. Visit
the National Hoodie
Day website to learn more about this initiative and to purchase your own
hoodie. You can also view a video about AIME or visit their
Youtube Channel.
Below are some pictures of Allens people wearing the red hoodie. Click on a

Human rights, labour, environment, anti-corruption.
Allens was the first organisation in Australia to become a
signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, a global corporate citizenship
initiative.
The Global Compact commits the firm to aligning our operations and
strategies with 10 universally accepted principles, covering human rights,
labour, the environment and anti-corruption.
Allens' internal and external
practices – including our workplace and environment policies and community
activities as well as the achievements of our community committees over the past
12 months – regularly met the criteria set by the Global Compact.
Working to fulfil the Global Compact means, businesses like ours can help ensure
that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit
economies and societies everywhere.
Each Christmas, the firm gives to a charitable organisation to support a
program that helps those in need.
This year's electronic Christmas card was made up of our people's holiday
snaps and their ideas for the perfect holiday.
Instead of printing the card, the firm makes a donation to charity.
This year, Allens supported The Fred Hollows Foundation's Cataract Blindness
Prevention Program, which meant 700 people in Cambodia could receive the gift of
sight.
The Fred Hollows Foundation's Cataract Blindness Prevention Program –
Cambodia
Cambodia is a country where blindness remains one of the major health and
social problems. The Foundation's Cataract Blindness Prevention Program in
Cambodia works to ensure equal access to high- quality and affordable eye care
services for all people in Cambodia. The program serves almost half of the
population of Cambodia.
One person to receive sight-restoring surgery was Yim Noang.
Yim had been blind for five years. She longed to see the faces of her
grandchildren, especially her granddaughter Sun Doaun. Yim and her family live
in Prey Veng, the poorest province of Cambodia. It was Sun who would lead her
grandmother around the village, missing school as her mother worked to support
her family on the equivalent of 80 cents a day.
Yim was given the opportunity to have a free cataract operation from The Fred
Hollows Foundation. Her doctor, Dr Imtov, was trained by The Foundation at the
Tilganga Eye Centre in Nepal and performs about 400 cataract surgeries each
year.
A few days after her operation, Yim was very grateful to all who made her
vision possible again after five years of blindness:
Thank
you very much for helping me get my sight back.
I will never forget your team and the doctors. This has not only helped me
but also my grandchildren, so they can go back to school like the other
children. Thank you very much.

A survey of blindness completed
in 2007 found that nearly 54,000 people in Cambodia
are blind and that 74 per cent of these people
suffer from cataracts.
Since 2005, the Pro Bono and Charity Committees have conducted the Matched
Funding Program as a combined initiative to encourage philanthropy among our
people. Employees are able to make regular monthly donations from their pre-tax
salary to a range of charities, which are then matched dollar-for-dollar by the
firm. Staff are able to nominate any charity for inclusion in the program, and
currently contribute to approximately 80 charities throughout Australia and
overseas.
Our people are passionate about supporting the communities and the
environments in which we live and are the drivers of our Pro Bono, Charity and
Environment Committees' initiatives.
