For Commerce graduate Brian Kolia, the big plus about working at Allens Arthur Robinson is the opportunity to specialise in accounting at a leading law firm. Brian says it's the ongoing, on-the-job training and the opportunity to work on a variety of credit-related matters that makes the job interesting.
Day-to-day activities may include reconciling payments against client invoices on the company database, assisting lawyers with payment enquiries and advising external clients on payment options.
In the two years Brian has worked at Allens, he has acquired some law-firm specific skills, which he says are invaluable.
The end of the financial year is always a busy and challenging time - balancing the books and preparing reports and statements for Allens partners on the previous year's activity.
But Brian says it's not all number crunching. The nature of his work puts him in contact with a diverse range of people.
'Expect the unexpected', is the philosophy Brian lives by at work. He says it's the people he interacts with, both within the company and external clients, that makes the job rewarding.
And being a keen sportsman and amateur rugby player is by no means a drawback to his career. Brian is a member of the Allens volleyball team and got involved in organising the corporate services team for the latest Allens swimming competition.
'I try to get involved in extra-curricular events. It strengthens the bond with my fellow workmates,' Brian says.
'There's a time to work and a time to play.'
