Brief biography

Born around 1945 in the country of Atnangkere, Gloria is the most consistently well-known painter of the seven Petyarre sisters. She paints landscapes (having won the Wynne Prize for landscape in 1995) but also paints Awelye (women's ceremonies) derived from women's body paint designs and those of the Arnkerrth (Mountain Devil Lizard). Other subjects are those based on a great variety of bush food. A leading member of the Utopia batik group in the 1980s, she travelled to Ireland, England, France, Thailand and India representing the Utopia women with the exhibition, Utopia – A Picture Story, the Holmes a Court Collection, 1990. Petyarre is one of the most widely exhibited Utopia artists whose works have been shown nationally and internationally.

About the works

Gloria paints traditional women's business subjects. Using close tonal values of different colours to create a dynamic optical intensity, she continually experiments in her practice with powerful structural linear patterns derived from body painting, outlined with single dots. Her paintings are often developed to a sophisticated level of abstraction typical of much contemporary painting.
